Individual spiritual guidance (also called spiritual direction or companioning) is a contemplative practice that nurtures a person's relationship with God (or however they name what they consider Sacred, Holy, Creator, or a Higher Power). It is meant to help the unique spiritual life center within each person to emerge. Although often called spiritual direction, it is less about being "directed" and more about being accompanied and occasionally guided on a journey of spiritual exploration, discovery, and formation.
Individual spiritual guidance takes place in confidential one-on-one sessions in which a person meets with a spiritual guide who has been specifically trained and has a good deal of experience listening for God's presence and invitations alongside those who want to draw closer to God's heart. During spiritual guidance we listen deeply to the experiences of a person's life and contemplate God's presence and grace within them. We turn our attention to the spiritual journey that is taking place and come to recognize guideposts that point the way into fuller relationships with each other, ourselves, Earth, and Sacred Spirit. We may become aware that all of life is sacred and bears witness to the nature of God's deep and abiding love for us.
Individual spiritual guidance typically takes place on an ongoing basis. A person meets with a spiritual guide on a monthly basis for a session lasting about an hour. The suggested donation is $75-$100, although there is no set fee. An initial meeting is helpful to evaluate the needs of the person seeking guidance and prayerfully consider the suitability of the spiritual guide to the person seeking guidance.
